Common questions

Questions about your USCIS case

Short, clear answers without complicated legal language.

How do I check my USCIS case status?

With your 13-character receipt number: three letters and ten digits (for example, IOE followed by ten digits). Enter it in the free MigraConnect app, no account needed, to see the official status with its full description. You can also check it on the USCIS website.

Where do I find my receipt number?

At the top of the Notice of Action (Form I-797C) USCIS mails after receiving your application. It starts with letters like IOE, EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, NBC or MSC. If you filed online, it also appears in your USCIS account.

What does "Case Was Received" mean, and how long does it last?

It's the first status: USCIS received your application and logged it under a receipt number. It can stay that way for months without meaning anything is wrong, until USCIS assigns it to an officer or asks you for something. The next change depends on your form: for example, a biometrics appointment or a request for evidence.

How long will my case take?

USCIS publishes processing times by form and office, calculated on most cases. MigraConnect shows the official time for your case type, including the figure for the slowest 20% of cases that others don't show, so you get the full picture.

How do I find out the moment my case changes?

Checking the USCIS website every day isn't practical, and mailed notices can arrive late. With MigraConnect+ you get the fastest USCIS alerts on the market on your phone the moment the status changes, so you can act on time, for example on a request for evidence with a deadline.
