Common questions

Questions about your FOIA request

Short, clear answers without complicated legal language.

How do I check the status of my FOIA request?

With the control number USCIS assigned when it received your request: it starts with NRC or ends in REQ and appears on your acknowledgment letter. Enter it above to see every completed step, free and with no account.

What do the Received, In Process and Completed steps mean?

Received: USCIS logged your request and assigned it a number. In process: they're locating and reviewing the records you asked for. Completed: the response is ready; if you filed online, you can download the documents from your USCIS account.

How long does a USCIS FOIA request take?

It depends on the type of record and the track USCIS assigns it. Many requests take several months, and USCIS publishes its average times on its website. If you have a pending immigration court hearing, say so in your request to ask for priority.

How do I request my immigration file from USCIS?

File a FOIA request online with your USCIS account or with Form G-639. In most cases there's no fee. If what you need is the record of your immigration court proceedings, the request goes to EOIR, not USCIS.

Can I get an alert when my FOIA request moves forward?

Yes. MigraConnect is the only service that alerts you at every step of your FOIA request. Add your control number in the app and, with MigraConnect+, you'll get an alert on your phone with each new step.
